Keppel emerges top at WSH Awards 2017

Keppel Group has clinched 36 awards at this year's Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards, organised by the Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Singapore. This is the highest number of awards won by a single organisation this year.

Of the 36 awards, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) received 28 awards under the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) category for good project safety and health management systems.

Keppel FELS and Keppel Singmarine, subsidiaries of Keppel O&M, also clinched the WSH Performance (Silver) Awards for exemplary safety performances and implementation of strong WSH management systems.

Four companies from the Keppel Group garnered WSH Innovation Awards, which recognise companies for their efforts in creating solutions which help to improve safety at the workplace.

Keppel Merlimau Cogen, the operator of a power plant in Singapore, garnered the innovation award for its Sea Water Intake Guide Cleaning project, which improved safety by eliminating the use of divers to clean the power plant's stop gate guides. Its mechanical spring-loaded scraper shaved off barnacles and marine growth effectively, improving efficiency and helping to achieve cost savings of about $80,000 per annum.

Keppel FELS received the innovation award for the Handy Bolt and Nut Tightener, which improved work productivity and reduced the risk of finger injuries. Its spring lock mechanism can be adjusted to fit bolts and nuts of different sizes, and its neodymium alloy magnets firmly secure the bolt and nut in place during the tightening and dismantling of flanged pipe connections.

Keppel DHCS, a subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure, clinched the innovation award for its Multi-Purpose Lifter, which reduced the risk of musculoskeletal injuries from the lifting of heavy manhole covers, and the risk of workers falling into the valve chamber during the maintenance and inspection of district cooling systems.

Keppel Logistics won the innovation award for redesigning the manual and laborious process of cable cutting and re-spooling. The project reduced the risk of injuries and improved productivity by 30% by implementing changes such as lowering the height of the re-spooling unit, recreating the cable cutting unit with metal guard panels to prevent the drum from rolling over, and installing a full rotational function to help with spooling the cables easily.

In addition, Mr Saravanan Marimuthu, Senior Welding Superintendent at Keppel FELS, and Mr Mani Rajasekaran, Assistant Control and Instrument Engineer at Keppel Merliamu Cogen, received the Supervisor Awards for their exemplary performances in ensuring a safe working environment for workers under their charge.

Mr R K Jaggi, General Manager, Group Health, Safety and Environment, Keppel Corporation, said, "Safety is a core value for Keppel. We place the highest priority on the health and safety of people and the protection of assets and the environment in all our different businesses, wherever we operate. We strive to promote a strong safety culture built on strong leadership from management, employee knowledge and skill sets, innovation, campaigns, as well as employee-led initiatives which empower workers to make changes on the ground."

"We are encouraged by the WSHC's recognition of our concerted efforts. These awards are a testament to our commitment to provide a workplace where everyone goes home safe every day."

The Keppel Group has participated in the WSH Awards since it began in 2006. In 2016, the Group also clinched the highest number of WSH Awards won by a single organisation, with 35 awards.
